So, you’re all set to be kind. You’ve picked out a card, but hang on a second, for the life of you, you just can’t remember your friend’s address!
We’ve compiled a list of eight ways to find out - and they’re all easy peasy.
Here’s the Unseasoned guide for what to do when you can’t remember where your mate lives and you want to find their address (without ruining the surprise):
1. Ask someone close to them
If you have a ‘friend in-law’ who you trust, simply let them know that you have a surprise for their friend that you’d love to send to their house. They’ll likely be more than happy to help :)
2. Send it to their workplace instead
Getting a nice surprise at work can be just as exciting as getting an unexpected card in the letterbox at home. If your friend works for a large company though, remember to address the card to the department they work in. A cheeky LinkedIn stalk can help to find this - but remember to turn on private mode so you don’t spoil the surprise!
Our only advice is that if you’re sending to someone’s workplace, perhaps steer clear of sending them this card, otherwise you may need to quickly follow up by sending them this card!
Tip 1: Some businesses may have separate postal and street addresses. You can check this on their website or by calling their reception.
Tip 2: If your friend has ever sent you an email from their work address, check the address in their email signature block.
3. Check through your chat history
I’d be lost without my chat history. I use it to store everything from the recipe for my famous chicken burritos to the recipe for my famous beef burritos - and the occasional address...
You’ll be surprised how many times people have given you their address in the chat history to come and pick them up from their house or drop them off.
You can easily find people’s addresses by typing the word ‘address’ into the search bar within your messenger app of choice. Other phrases which may trigger results include: ‘where’, ‘live’, ‘drop off’, ‘pick me up from’ etc.
To find a friend’s address on the Facebook Messenger app, simply:
- Open your conversation
- Select the ‘i’ on the top right of the page
- Select ‘search in conversation’
- Type the word ‘address’
- Open your conversation
- Tap on their name at the top of the screen
- Select ‘search in conversation’
- Type the word ‘address’
- Select ‘chats’
- Click on the search bar at the top of the page
- Type the word ‘address’
- Open your conversation
- Select the search bar on the top of the page
- Type the word ‘address’
- Head to the ‘forgot your password’ page
- Type in your weird-ass Hotmail email address that you thought was hilarious when you were 14 years old
- Head to hotmail.com to retrieve the password
- Realise that you don’t know the password for this either
- Give up and try a different method - your friend has probably moved house in the last 20 years anyway…
If you’re anything like me, you go through sporadic points in life when you’re highly organised for a day (before regressing back into the chaos). Check your phone’s contacts - you may have saved more than just their phone number.
5. Check your purchase history
If you’ve ever travelled overseas with this friend and you’re not someone who deletes old emails (who actually does?!), then chances are that you may be able to find their address in the billing details of a flight ticket or hotel stay. Search through your emails for any keywords from your trip like the destination name, the company you booked through, the AirBNB or hotel you stayed at, or your visa confirmation documents.
Tip: If this was a big trip, you may even have a folder dedicated to it hiding in plain sight on your desktop.
6. Retrace your steps using Google Street View
I don’t know half of my friend’s addresses, but one thing I have memorised is how to drive to their house. If you’re a visual person like me, simply head to Google Maps, open the Street View function and retrace your steps. If you know what their house looks like, you will be able to find the exact address on street view.
7. Check your Uber ride history
If you’ve ever shared an Uber, an Ola or a Didi with a mate after seven too many espresso martinis, you may still have their address saved in your ride history.
8. Search the White pages
Yes, this still exists. And if the person you’re sending a card to is older than 140, or has a relative who still thinks it’s too expensive to call a mobile, then chances are that they may still be listed. Head to whitepages.com.au/residential to find out - all you need is their surname and their suburb to get started.
Note: My Grandma is still listed and is always up for a good chat if you happen to come across her. Allow 60 to 90 minutes.
Now that you’ve found your friend’s address, you’re as free as a bird to send some love. Click here to head to our card categories page and get started.
